DAKOTA - In convo with Chloe - website header

1. How long have you worked at DAKOTA?

7 years, 8 months – with a gap when I had my baby boy.

2. Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what made you pursue a career in interior design?

After my A-levels, it was time to find a job so I applied for an apprenticeship with DAKOTA as it seemed fun and exciting, and it would allow me to be creative. Upon completion of my apprenticeship, I was then offered a full-time position.

3. What does a typical day entail as a design assistant?

I’d say no two days are the same at DAKOTA, but my role mainly entails working on initial design concepts by developing mood boards, sample boards and visuals.

I also help with drawing packs and specification documents, as well as regularly meeting with sales reps to keep up to date with all the latest offerings from suppliers.

4. What three words would you use to describe life at DAKOTA?

Every day is different.

5. What has been your favourite project to work on at DAKOTA and why?

My favourite project to work on was Malmaison Edinburgh City.

I was heavily involved with the project from start to finish and it was great to see all our hard work come together in real life.

6. What would you say is the interior design trend to watch right now?

Design trends are a lot like current fashion trends; people are increasingly wanting more sustainable and environmentally friendly options.

7. What advice would you give anyone wanting to get into the industry?

Work experience is key! Being in the real world is so different to how you imagine it – get as much experience as you can and try to stand out.

8. And finally, what would your career plan B have been?

When I was growing up, I had lots of different jobs in mind from a merchant banker to a chiropodist. But ultimately, I think I would have gone down the creative path of drama and screenwriting as a plan B.
