DAKOTA - In convo with Michaela - website header

1. How long have you worked at DAKOTA?

5 years, 9 months

2. Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what made you pursue a career in interior design?

I studied Art at A-Level and had always been interested in home interiors and styling, so I decided to go straight to university to study interior design.

I worked in retail on weekends for four years, which I kept on throughout university, and in my second year, I came to DAKOTA for work experience. When I graduated, I then applied for a full-time position.

3. What does a typical day entail as an interior designer?

My role is mainly working on the initial design and concept stage, formulating mood boards, sample boards, and visuals, as well as preparing presentations and detailed drawings.

4. What three words would you use to describe life at DAKOTA?

Collaborative, motivating and engaging.

5. What has been your favourite project to work on at DAKOTA and why?

My favourite project is a recent one for Aspers Casino in Stratford. I enjoyed working on a stripped-back scheme for their bar area, Tanzibar. The furniture was bespoke, so I really loved picking the various fabrics to give the space an eclectic and very plush feel.

6. What advice would you give anyone wanting to get into the industry?

Try and get work experience where you can; this really gives you a first-hand insight into an interior practice and helps to get your foot in the door to really show your potential.

7. And finally, what would your career plan B have been?

Through school, I wanted to be a police officer. But going into high school, I always enjoyed the more creative subjects and realised I wanted a job that would allow me to be creative and do design.
